China's commercial vehicle exports steadily rise

The statistical data of customs auto exports compiled by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade shows that in 2012, China’s auto exports exceeded 1 million vehicles. Among them, commercial vehicles exported 428,400 units, an increase of 12.71% year-on-year; export value was US$9.452 billion, an increase of 23.94% over the same period of last year.

Exports grow faster than exports

In 2012, the export of commercial vehicles in China continued to grow steadily, becoming a major highlight in the continuing downturn in the domestic market.

In addition to the feature of increasing volume and increasing prices, the trend of China's commercial vehicle export growth rate higher than the export growth rate is also obvious. For example, the number of trucks exported was 321,400, an increase of 10.23% year-on-year; the amount of exports was US$4.182 billion, which represented a year-on-year increase of 20.2%. The number of passenger cars exported was 17,800, an increase of 8.84% year-on-year; the value of exports was 1,452 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 26.76% over the same period of last year.

The correlation between commercial vehicles and economic development is very strong. It can be said that it is a “barometer” of the economic situation. In the context of the European debt crisis and the global economic recession, domestic economic growth is also slowing and some commercial vehicle companies are in trouble.

After experiencing the international financial crisis in 2008, China’s commercial vehicle companies have actively adjusted their overseas market strategies. Under the general environment of slowing domestic economic growth, commercial vehicle exports have been steadily rising in 2012. Represented by trucks and buses, it has a clear comparative advantage. Sales in overseas markets are no longer a supplement to domestic sales, but have become an important part of corporate development.

Trucks are the main export vehicles for commercial vehicles

Looking at the international commercial vehicle market in 2012, the commercial vehicle market is in the doldrums due to the impact of the US financial crisis and the European debt crisis. China's commercial vehicles, especially trucks, are also facing unprecedented pressure. In 2012, the sales of heavy trucks in China dropped by about 28% year-on-year, but exports brought surprises.

From January to December 2012, the total number of trucks exported was 321,400, an increase of 10.23% year-on-year, accounting for 75.03% of the total exports of commercial vehicles. Among them, 50,200 heavy-duty trucks were exported, a year-on-year increase of 2.99%; the export value reached US$2.085 billion, an increase of 25.94% over the same period of last year. Among other varieties of commercial vehicles, with the exception of the year-on-year decline in the export of medium-sized goods vehicles, the export of other types of vehicles has been increasing, and the performance has been outstanding.

In this regard, the industry believes that due to the domestic economic restructuring, the demand for trucks shrink, more companies will focus on overseas, overseas investment than in the past, so the market has a corresponding return. At the same time, the world economy is unevenly distributed. The economic structure of many countries is different from that of China. The economic development trend is also different from that of China. The demand for trucks in some developing countries and new economies is still increasing.

Bus export status upgrade

From the export data, the significant increase in passenger car exports is an important feature of passenger car exports in 2012.

According to statistics, the number of passenger cars exported to China was 55,100, an increase of 26.47% year-on-year; the value of exports was 1.954 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 24.46% year-on-year.

The domestic passenger car market is currently dominated by independent brands, and the pattern is relatively stable. Products have strong price/performance advantages and international competitive advantages. The status of major passenger vehicles is clear, and the increase in exports is much higher than the export volume. In 2012, the increase in the export volume of large passenger cars was 8.84%, while the increase in exports amounted to 26.76%, indicating that the bus export structure had undergone a fundamental change. Among the large passenger cars exported, the proportion of high-end products has further increased. This trend of passenger car exports will further improve the image of China’s passenger cars in the world bus market.

The growth of bus exports has effectively supported the other half of the export of commercial vehicles in China. From this perspective, China's commercial vehicles have made great strides in many aspects such as product categories, quality, and brands.

From the perspective of export regions, domestic export markets in 2012 were concentrated in traditional markets such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. In addition, the demand in the South American market is also relatively strong.

The increase in passenger car exports is not unrelated to the strengthening of after-sales services and high-end routes. Passenger car companies are more effective in developing high-end markets in developed countries than trucks. Companies such as Daikin Dragon and Ankai performed well in high-end bus exports. In 2012, Ankai double-decker buses operated on the London gold line and 100 Jinlong buses served the London Olympics, proving that our bus companies have successfully entered the high-end European market.
