Scientists, including Indian scientists, have developed a new method that can convert biomass waste into chemical products that can be used to create high-energy fuel for airplanes and racing cars. A group of researchers from Purdue University directly catalyzed the conversion of biomass into biofuels, or C3Bio, using chemical catalysts and thermal stimulation reactions to convert lignin into valuable chemical commodities. Lignin is a tough and highly complex molecule that makes the plant cell wall a rigid structure.
Purdue's team has developed a process that begins with untreated debris, crushed wood from sustainable poplars, eucalyptus and birch trees. Catalysts are added to the chemical reactions required for startup and speed, but are not recycled and reused by them. Materials that are added to the mixed solvent to help dissolve and relax. The mixture contains a pressurized water reactor and is heated for several hours. The process can be decomposed, resulting in a liquid flow of lignocellulose-free and lignin molecules, containing two additional chemical products. The liquid stream contains a solvent that easily evaporates and recovers and two phenols, an aromatic hydrocarbon compound used in perfumes and fragrances. Currently used artificial vanilla seasoning production uses phenol from petroleum.
