According to data released by the European Chamber of Commerce’s AEBRUS, Russia’s sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles reached 253,700 units in October this year, a year-on-year increase of 5%, and totaled 24.42 million units in the first 10 months, a year-on-year increase of 13%.
China’s own brands continued to perform strongly in the Russian market. Sales of Geely, Chery, and Great Wall in several Chinese auto companies increased by more than half in October, especially Geely’s increase by more than 1.5 times. Accumulated sales in the previous October, doubled sales of multiple independent brands.
In the first three quarters of this year, the Russian automobile market has always maintained a double-digit growth rate, but sales growth in October has shrunk to a single-digit percentage. In October, the sales volume of Russian light vehicles was 253,732, which was a year-on-year increase of 5.3% when compared with 240,928 units in the same period of last year. Accumulated sales in the first 10 months were 2,441,663 units, up 12.9% over the 2,162,720 units sold in the same period last year.
Despite the slowdown in sales growth in October, Russia is still in a clear upward trend compared to the overall sales of Western Europe. In particular, after Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization’s WTO, the import tariffs on automotive products will gradually be reduced, which will drive the growth of the auto market, and at the same time attract more car manufacturers to inject into Russia to build factories and put into production. Against this background, Russia has become the second largest single car market in Europe after Germany.
The largest-selling brand on the Russian market is still Volga’s Lada, but the brand’s sales in the Russian market have recently declined, and in October it began to reverse the downward trend. In October, sales were 50,022 units, which represented a year-on-year increase of 1.5% from 49,270 units in the same period last year. Accumulated sales in the first 10 months decreased by 8.9% from 493,187 units to 449,164 units.
