Failure form and design criteria of the shaft

1. Failure modes of the shaft: mainly fatigue cracking due to insufficient fatigue strength, plastic deformation or brittle fracture due to insufficient static strength, wear, deformation and vibration exceeding the allowable range.

2. The design of the shaft should meet the following criteria:

(1) According to the working conditions of the shaft, the production batch and the economic principle, select suitable materials, blank forms and heat treatment methods.

(2) According to the specific requirements of the force of the shaft, the mounting position of the parts on the shaft, the matching size and positioning method, and the machining method of the shaft, the reasonable structural shape and size of the shaft are determined, that is, the structural design of the shaft is performed.

(3) Calculation or verification of the strength of the shaft. Stiffness calculations are also performed on slender shafts with large forces (such as worm shafts) and shafts with high stiffness requirements. For shafts that operate at high speeds, vibration resonance calculations should be performed because of the risk of resonance.
