Scientists create dictionary to decrypt chimpanzee gesture meaning

A team of scientists from Scotland found that chimpanzees use hand and body movements to communicate. Although it has long been known that some chimpanzee gestures have corresponding meanings and intentions behind them, they can finally be uncovered. A group of primatologist zoologists from the University of St. Andrews created a chimpanzee gesture “dictionary” 18 months after observing a chimpanzee from the Budongo Forest in Uganda.

In total, scientists recorded gestures for more than 4,500 instances. They can determine the meaning behind 15 to 36 gestures. When a chimpanzee pats an object or hands, it means "leave" or "disappear." When a chimpanzee raises an arm, it means "I want to." After the dictionary-like gestures have been established, the research team will begin to evaluate the nuances of specific actions and further infer their current results.
